This course explores the part level stress analysis tool that is in every seat of SOLIDWORKS. This tool can simulate how a model will react to read world loads and restraints and give you results you can use to guide design decisions about loads, materials, and the model itself. Will something bend? Will it break? Can you save weight or does it need to be thicker? Wouldn't it be great to know this before going into manufacturing or have a failure? This course will show you the steps to analyze the handle on a valve assembly and go from model to results. Software required: SOLIDWORKS.

Course Overview
Hi everyone, my name is Tony Riggs, and welcome to my course on SOLIDWORKS Essentials - Simulation Xpress. I'm an elite application engineer at GoEngineer, a SolidWorks reseller that sells and supports SolidWorks in the southcentral and western United States. As an application engineer I have the responsibility for training, technical support, and product demonstrations of SolidWorks and several other products that we carry. Why do we need to run a stress analysis on a design? Did it already break? Did it break last time and we want to avoid it this time? Is the price of material high enough we want to optimize the design to reduce weight? Will a lighter part help in others ways? The reasons are endless. Have we run analysis before and all that we know is red is bad and blue is good? How bad is bad? In this course we're going to look at making our designs better and catch potential issues before they catch us. There's a couple major topics that we're going to cover, how to apply loads and restraints, what kind of materials do we want to use, and once we get the results, what do they really tell us? By the end of this course we're going to be putting real-world loads and restraints on the model, mesh and run the analysis, and then see what the results tell us. Before beginning this course you should have an idea of the kinds of scenarios we're going to run through on the stress of our model. From here you should feel comfortable diving into courses on more advanced simulation products. Simulation Xpress Setup
Hello everyone, this is Tony Riggs. Welcome to this SOLIDWORKS Essentials course on Simulation Xpress. Did you know that every seed of SolidWorks has SimXpress included? Have you ever looked at the stress analysis of your design? Did you do it during the design phase, or after the first part failed? Are you worried about the weight of your part, or did you design it with the motto of when in doubt make it stout? Do you ever have someone else that looks at your analysis for you? Wouldn't you feel better if they didn't look at it for 10 minutes and send it back laughing at a simple design flaw that you could have easily caught? That's where Simulation Xpress can help. Let's take a look at the different modules that we're going to cover. So Simulation Xpress is a first-pass stress analysis tool for the part level that will give us linear static analysis, where we can come in, apply fixtures, loads, and materials. So we're going to cover this is the Setup module. Our second module is going to cover results and reports. So we're going to look at the von Mises stress, the displacement, factor of safety, those types of results. Reports and eDrawings can also be sent out to other members of the team to show the different examples. So let's take a look at the design scenario that we're going to go through. We have a valve assembly that works great most of the time, but the valve does lock up every once in a while. In SolidWorks we can move the handle and have collision detection stop the movement at the two stops, but in our scenario, the valve is going to lock up in the middle of the movement. How hard can we pull before the handle breaks? Is it over-designed, or does it need some help? With Simulation Xpress we can try to find out.

SimXpress Results and Reports
Welcome back. In this second module we're just going to look at the SimulationXpress Results and Reports. What kind of stresses are we looking at, what kind of deflection, what kind of factor of safety? A lot of times we base everything off of the factor of safety because that gives us a good look at the rest of the part and how it's going to perform. Do we need to go back in and make changes to the model, get things to update, how do we bring in the results to a Word document? We can come in and get all kinds of images from the analysis and make a one-stop document that we can send out to others that need to see the report. Also eDrawings, that's an email-able format that we can send out. Now at the end of this course I'm actually going to include all of the models, the SolidWorks models, along with the reports as well, so watch for those and be able to download those and go through them on your own.
